The modern resort of Sochi spreads for 145 km along the eastern Black seacoast from Magri to the Psou-river. The length of its beaches totals in 118 km. Moreover the sea is not the only natural resource in Sochi area. The city spreads for 50 km from the seacoast to the foothills of the Main Caucasus Maintain range. The whole area is part of the State national park which in its turn is included in Caucasus biospheric reservation. From the seacoast you can quickly reach the height of thousands of metres over the sea level. Some mountain peaks in Sochi area such reach over 3000 m, e.g. Chugush (3238m), Pseashkho (3256m).
The city of Big Sochi includes 4 districts. The western part is the most extensive Lazarevsky district with population of 78000 people. The highest population density is in the Central district which is the administrative centre and co-location of the most sanatoria, hotels, guest houses. The population rate is 114000 people. The warmest Khostinsky district (71000residents) borders on highland Adler district (102000 residents).
Geographic coordinates of Sochi are 43 degrees 50 minutes North and 39 degrees 40 minutes East.
Advantageous geodraphic location makes the city of Sochi the sunniest and warmest resort in Russia.
Sochi climate is one of the most auspicious in Europe. It is situated about the same latitude as world famous spa and ski resorts Varna (Bulgaria), Sarajevo (Bosnia), Toronto (Canada), Sapporo (Japan), Shenyang (China) and Riviera (France).
Nature gifted Sochi with 300 sunny days a year, so it has no low season.
From May to November the weather is stable, clear and humid. The average daily temperature is usually 20C, reaching at daytime 25 – 28C. Summer is the hottest season in Sochi when the air temperature can rise to 40C. The autumn comes imperceptibly. The sea heated under the burning sun keeps warm for a long time and enables the swimming season even in October. This period is optimal for spa and climatotherapy.
Close proximity to mountains which protect the city area from cold air flows makes the winter in Sochi short, mild and usually frostless. Someday temperature can reach 15 – 19C. Hardly ever one can witness snow in Sochi. As to the real winter it can be found at Krasnaya Polyana. Since December on the slopes of resort suburbs ski season opens and usually lasts till late in May. The average daily temperature on the ski routes is usually 0 + 2C.
The average annual temperature amplitude does not exceed 14C. It has a wholesome effect on extraordinary diverse flora. The endemics indigenous to this area grow next to relict and exotic fauna from all over the world. All seasons in the city parks there are flowering roses and yuccas. Evergreen magnolia, box tree, eucalyptus, various palm trees and even banana flourish in subtropical climate. The nature itself contributes to recreation and relaxation.
